Sustainability
Modular construction by its nature provides an efficient form of construction, as factory processes support lean manufacturing.
Caledonian Building Systems offers the client a highly sustainable form of building through the following:
Recycling
Modular components - Over 25% of the module can be manufactured from building elements identified as A+ within the Green Guide which contain materials such as steel, OSB boards and insulation. Enhancements can be achieved to meet client requirements, for example the use of lamb's wool as insulation.
Factory and site waste
Waste can be significantly reduced in the design phase to ensure the optimum use of material. Buying in bulk loads that eliminate waste through the use of standard sizing and having products such as plasterboard cut to size, or by rationalizing on certain products that show a surplus at the end of a project, the surplus can be used in another project.
Caledonian now diverts all waste from land fill from its factory activities, through segregation and recycle of materials or burning waste within a CHP plant. On site activities now typically recycle 80% of the waste generated.
Caledonian has signed up to WRAP "Halving waste to landfill" initiative and is actively seeking to further reduce waste generation by reappraising factory and site processes.
In 2008, Caledonian was given a "Highly Commended" status in the Building Magazine Awards for sustainability, sponsored by WRAP.
