Sustainable Construction
Caledonian Building Systems takes the issue of sustainability seriously in its approach to the manufacturing and construction of modular buildings.
Building Magazine – WRAP Award 2008 for Sustainable Construction
Caledonian achieved a “highly commended” status as a finalist in the 2008 awards in Building Magazine. Caledonian was able to demonstrate that it recycles 100% of its factory waste; exceeds Government targets on the use of recycled materials within its build processes and can demonstrate significant savings on carbon dioxide emissions over traditional methods of construction.
Measures for reducing carbon dioxide emissions
An independent study by consultants EDS was able to demonstrate that the Caledonian System produced a 33 Tonnes carbon dioxide reduction in the construction of a 54 bed, 3 storey residential facility for the MOD against traditional methods. This is achieved in the following ways:
- Design - each module is designed to meet the individual project requirements. As such components are fabricated to exact dimensions, so eradicating waste from the process. Caledonian has also worked closely with its supply chain to reduce waste and ensure factory waste is recycled. As an example, plasterboard is cut to size for individual projects. Any waste that is generated is returned to our supplier for recycling
- Recycled materials in manufacture - around 30% of the components used in the manufacture of the modules are from recycled and sustainable resources
- Packaging - Caledonian Building Systems has again worked with its supply chain to reduce packaging and encourages the use of re usable packaging, pallets and stillage. Any waste that is created is bailed and sent for recycling
- Site Waste – On average 80% of site waste is recycled
- Traffic reduction - buildings constructed using volumetric methods of construction show and 80% reduction in traffic movements compared to traditional methods
Environmental Standards and legislation
Building Regulations are due to change in 2010 and again in 2013. Caledonian Building Systems is well placed to deliver against these improved standards. There is a great deal of flexibility in the kinds of heating and ventilating systems that can be used; alternative forms sustainable insulation; as well as rain water capture, grey water systems, solar heating, PV cells and living roofs.
Caledonian Building Systems can demonstrate:
- BREEAM / DREEAM (military) - Excellent achieved
- Code for Sustainable Homes - Achieved level 4
- Part L - able to improve on current standards by 50%
- Air Tightness - can achieve below 3 m cu / m sq/ hr
