WRAP

(Waste & Resources Action Programme)

In February 2009 Caledonian Building Systems signed up to WRAP's Halving Waste to Landfill initiative to support activities in our existing environmental policy. Caledonian takes its environmental commitments seriously and is working alongside its waste management contractor to proactively reduce waste further.

Headline Figures

  • 80% of waste is recycled
  • 10% of waste is diverted to CHP to produce energy
  • 10% is currently sent to land fill
  • Caledonian is committed to a 20% year on year waste reduction
  • Around 3,000 tonnes of waste is produced annually, with plaster board making up almost half of the waste by weight

What WRAP means for Caledonian

Working with WRAP means that we can assess a range of measure and tools that allows us to better identify opportunities to reduce waste in the first place but also increase our recycled content from both the factory and from sites. Initiatives underway include:

  • Working with supply chain to design out waste through re-usable packaging or "take back" schemes
  • Make improvements to the dedicated on site waste management compounds
  • An on-going training regime with our employees and sub-contractors to reduce waste that is generated and segregate waste in more effective ways to allow a greater proportion of recycling
  • Working with other agencies involved in recycling such as Arap develop systems that can be adopted by the wider construction market
  • Undertake individual studies for clients to provide information required for specific initiatives

What is WRAP?

The aim of WRAP is to promote a business case for change and provide free access to tools and know-how so that companies can make best use of materials resource and, in doing so, creates real commercial value for the industry.

'The Construction Commitments: Halving Waste to Landfill is a voluntary agreement which provides a framework through which industry can support and deliver against the industry target of halving waste to landfill by 2012. Developed in consultation with the industry, it directly supports the Strategic Forum's Construction Commitments and will be the key delivery and measurement framework for industry as it works towards meeting this target. By supporting Halving of Waste to Landfill, your organisation will undertake to adopt a common approach to measuring and reporting on progress.'
