High performance accommodation for high performing Marines

Royal Marines Poole is based on the edge of Poole Harbour, Dorset. The base was originally known as HMS Turtle and used for training of personnel for the Normandy D-Day landings. In 1954, its name became the Amphibious School Royal Marines, and later changed its name to the Amphibious Training Unit Royal Marines. It subsequently changed its name to Royal Marines Poole, to reflect the variety of training within the establishment.

At Hamworthy, living accommodation for Junior ranks of the Royal Marines were classified for replacement by the SLAM Project Team, due to age, layout and maintenance requirements. The brief via Debut Services, Calendonian’s modular contractor, was to design and construct a purpose built unit to accommodate Servicemen in a highly functional, bright, visually appealing, easily maintained living environment.

The result is 3 units of 222 rooms, complete with common rooms, clothes drying and utility areas, kitchens and prep areas etc. Throughout, a maritime look has been achieved with the central lobby and open landings using steel cable, stainless fittings and bulkhead lighting.
The project was completed in 5 months, from first delivery to commissioning.
